In November, experts at the Beijing Tiantan Hospital performed surgery using a 5G powered Remebot medical robot on a patient suffering from Parkinson's disease nearly 200 kilometres away. PA Hospital lung cancer researcher Dr Arutha Kulasinghe has collaborated with local and overseas researchers to identify a genetic marker called IFI27 in the lung tissue and blood of people with Covid-19 which can be used to identify how severe the virus is likely to be in Covid-19 patients and signal whether they need to be hospitalised or are able to quarantine at home. A revolutionary pathogen identification test, InfectID is a rapid, highly sensitive and adaptable test which addresses different target pathogens. The Journal of Emergency Medicine Australasia has published a simple technique to save shark attack victims at the scene by stemming blood loss. The technique relies on a second person using their fist and bodyweight to stem flow in the victim’s groin, buying them time while help arrives. Lead author and surfer, Dr Nicholas Taylor, developed the idea after visiting Western Australia during a time of increased shark attacks. More than 28,000 Australians are diagnosed with melanoma every year, with 15,000 set to trial 3D body scanners to detect and treat melanoma. The Australian Cancer Research Foundation will roll out the new technology in Queensland, NSW and Victoria, using full body mapping enabling researchers to investigate and track potentially problematic moles and skin spots over a five-year period. Researchers hope to create an algorithm which can detect those most at risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.
