5G enables 60-second remote brain surgery
In November, experts at the Beijing Tiantan Hospital performed surgery using a 5G powered Remebot medical robot on a patient suffering from Parkinson's disease nearly 200 kilometres away. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) was conducted with images from the Zhangjiakou operating room sent to Beijing Tiantan's 5G remote command center in real time. This way, experts controlled and observed the operation and patient's vitals. |  https://news.cgtn.com/news/2021-11-08/5G-powered-medical-Remebot-performs-remote-brain-surgery-in-60-seconds-151tj2h2CXu/index.html

Research breakthrough spotlights how society can tackle COVID-19
PA Hospital lung cancer researcher Dr Arutha Kulasinghe has collaborated with local and overseas researchers to identify a genetic marker called IFI27 in the lung tissue and blood of people with Covid-19 which can be used to identify how severe the virus is likely to be in Covid-19 patients and signal whether they need to be hospitalised or are able to quarantine at home. Sydney-based company SpeeDx are now developing a blood test that could be used by an infected person, early on in their symptoms, as a guide to how bad their infection will be. | https://www.pafoundation.org.au/news/36/covid-19-studies-advanced-thanks-to-cancer-research

Aussie biotech receives approval for COVID-19 tests in Europe
Australian biotech Microbio has had their InfectID-COVID-19 tests approved for sale in Europe. A revolutionary pathogen identification test, InfectID is a rapid, highly sensitive and adaptable test which addresses different target pathogens. Two SARS-CoV-2 tests by Microbio have been developed and received approval for sale in Europe under IVD Directive 98/79/EC. This approval enables the privately held scale-up to move into additional international markets, including India, North America, Africa, and Asia. The tests have a 100% success rate and have been compared to other real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests that claim to detect all variants. | shorturl.at/zFMNY

ER Doctor develops technique to save shark attack victims
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Australasia has published a simple technique to save shark attack victims at the scene by stemming blood loss. The technique relies on a second person using their fist and bodyweight to stem flow in the victim’s groin, buying them time while help arrives. Lead author and surfer, Dr Nicholas Taylor, developed the idea after visiting Western Australia during a time of increased shark attacks. He would like to see the technique incorporated into first aid training. | https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/sep/24/doctors-brilliant-new-first-aid-technique-can-stem-blood-loss-after-shark-attack

New technology to combat melanoma set for Australia
More than 28,000 Australians are diagnosed with melanoma every year, with 15,000 set to trial 3D body scanners to detect and treat melanoma. The Australian Cancer Research Foundation will roll out the new technology in Queensland, NSW and Victoria, using full body mapping enabling researchers to investigate and track potentially problematic moles and skin spots over a five-year period. Researchers hope to create an algorithm which can detect those most at risk of melanoma and other skin cancers. This technology will also contribute to a national database of 100,000 patient images taken from the 15 state-of-the-art 3D imaging systems. | https://thewest.com.au/news/health/game-changer-melanoma-scanners-booted-up-c-3946300
